It's not quite as successful as Gordon's last film -- the underrated 1996 Kurt Vonnegut adaptation "Mother Night" -- but "Waking the Dead" definitely works. Crudup and Connolly are both unusual and unusually appealing young stars, the chemistry between them is potent, and their teaming creates a palpable sense of haunting, breathless romance.

Waking The Dead will appeal to wide audiences, enthrall afficionados of the genre, and earn astronomically high ratings. The startling title says it all for irony and wit, qualities not usually associated with television drama.

ONE OF THE strangest films of the year, Waking the Dead is a romance in which the fear of selling out--a keen agony in baby boomers--takes on a supernatural, ghostly tinge. Those Old Enough to Remember get struck in the tear ducts immediately by the Joni Mitchell tune "A Case of You," which plays over the titles.

Waking the Dead debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2000. It opened in Brazil one week later and Austria in February and was shown at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in early March before going into limited release in North America later that month. It went on to gross $327,418 in North America, well below its budget.[1]
