Waking the Dead: Jennifer Connelly
built 278 days ago
Waking the Dead opens with a television image. In 1974, young Fielding Pierce (Billy Crudup) is watching the news when he sees that his girlfriend Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) has been killed in a car bomb explosion. He watches the TV for what seems like a long time, while images of Sarah come to him, maybe from the screen, maybe from photos framed in their apartment, maybe from his head. You might begin to wonder how much of whats happening is in Fieldings head and how much is reality.

All in all, the DVD experience for Waking the Dead is just as immersive as the film itself. While not exactly a film that screams for a special edition, its DVD treatment nonetheless feels like the film itself - a gem hidden amongst the big releases out there. When you're done with this disc, you'll have fallen not only for Jennifer Connelly, but for the entire film.

WAKING THE DEAD is an eerily atmospheric drama, awash in chilling shades of black, white, and gray. Director Keith Gordon's use of flashback and nonlinear storytelling effectively conveys the deep power of memory and love that transcends traditional conceptions of time. Alternating between the past and the present, Gordon's adaptation of the novel by Scott Spencer is a dreamy, mysterious affair that features supremely convincing lead performances by Crudup and Connelly as well as solid supporting turns by Janet McTeer and Hal Holbrook.
