The Waco and Austin divisions of Time Warner Cable are merging in a move that may give local customers more services but ... eliminates 30 local jobs. Stacy Schmitt, vice president for public affairs in Waco, said the local office will make programming decisions that affect Waco-area customers, and Time Warner Cable will continue to sponsor and support area events. Those changes include shuffling some positions and eliminating 30 jobs in the Waco division, which includes offices in Waco, Temple, Killeen and Fort Hood. The cuts hit several departments but especially the telemarketing and bill-collecting areas. The Waco division employs about 450 people. The Austin division, meanwhile, employs more than 1,000 and suffered no job losses as a result of the merger.

The quarterly Manpower Employment Outlook survey shows that more than a third of the employers surveyed in Waco plan to add workers during the first quarter of 2006. The survey found that 34 percent of Waco employers plan to increase staff, 56 percent plan no change and 10 percent plan to reduce their workforce. "A year ago at this time, employers revealed more modest hiring intentions when 27 percent of companies surveyed thought employment increases were likely and 20 percent intended to cut back," said Manpower spokesperson Deidra Crouch. In Killeen, 23 percent of the employers surveyed plan to add workers next year, 44 percent plan no change, and 20 percent plan reductions. In Temple, 13 percent plan to add workers, 61 percent plan no change and 13 percent plan decreases. Statewide, 26 percent of the employers surveyed plan to hire new workers during the first quarter, 59 percent plan no change and 9 percent plan reductions.
