Vg-001.jpg Located in the wild country of northern Minnesota, and perched along the United States/Canadian border, Voyageurs National Park is one of the few parks in the national park system which is primarily oriented to water. Although there are thick forests and interesting landforms, it is the lakes and waterways which make the park especially noteworthy. A full third of the park is accounted for by lakes, ponds, channels, and other waterways.

Voyageurs National Park Designated a park on April 8, 1975, Voyageurs National Park lies in the southern part of the Canadian Shield, representing some of the oldest exposed rock formations in the world. This bedrock has been shaped and carved by at least four periods of glaciation. The topography of the park is rugged and varied; rolling hills are interspersed between bogs, beaver ponds, swamps, islands, small lakes and four large lakes. In the years since the last glaciation, a thin layer of soil has been created which supports the boreal forest ecosystem, the "North Woods" of Voyageurs National Park.

Voyageurs National Park More than 35 percent of Voyageurs National Park is covered by water, most of it contained in four large lakes linked by narrow channels and small streams. There are many smaller lakes, as well as marshy areas and bogs. Visitors traveling through the park by canoe, motorboat, or houseboat often slip easily back and forth between the United States and Canada without knowing it.
Situated in the heart of Voyageurs National Park, at the very northern edge of Minnesota, is Rainy Lake. Here is true wilderness at its finest. a land of living history. One can almost hear the soft splash of canoe paddles dipping into pristine waters as the voyageurs made their way across the border country. Rainy Lake is, arguably, one of the finest walleye fisheries in the country. And Rainy ... has its fair share of numerous other game fish. However, it isn’t just the fishing that brings countless thousands of visitors to the area every year.
