Voyageurs National Park: Land
built 266 days ago
Snowmobiling in Voyageurs National Park’s winter landscape has become an increasingly popular recreation activity in the last decade. As a result, managers became in need of a snowmobile use estimation system that addressed changes in visitor travel dynamics and use levels within the park. The purpose of the use estimation project was to 1) identify visitor travel patterns and levels within the park and 2) provide managers with a more accurate model for estimating future use. Estimating visitor use in areas with multiple uncontrolled access points like Voyageurs National Park requires more than simply counting visitors. Two seasons of fieldwork were conducted in 2001 and 2002. The objective of the first “pilot” season was to develop reliable methodology for monitoring use and generate a preliminary model for estimating use in the park.
Voyageurs is different than some of the most famous parks in the National Park system in that it does not feature world-renowned features such as the Grand Canyon or Yosemite Valley. But the land here is lovely and noteworthy in its own way, and it preserves a type of wilderness that is not really present in other park other than nearby Isle Royale in Lake Superior. But experiencing the treasures of this park requires some extra effort.

The sixty-acre parcel of land purchased by Ultimate Development is the last piece of undeveloped waterfront property along Highway 11 between the City of Int'l Falls and Voyageurs National Park. The ten acre portion was purchased by the City with funds earmarked for economic development.
Eyeing soaring eagles, landing a walleye, hiking a trail or watching a loon; the land of the Voyageur National Park has changed little over the centuries. What you see most likely is what the French voyageurs saw so very long ago.
