Voodoo is a religion. This religion sprung from an era in man's history where men held other men in slavery. The people that were forced from the homes in Africa struggled to maintain and preserve their faith in the gods of their ancestors. From this struggle Voodoo emerged in Haiti and migrated to the swamps and bayous of Louisiana.

Voodoo survives as a legitimate religion in a number of areas of the world, Brazil where it is called "Candomblé" and the English speaking Caribbean where it is called “Obeah”. The Ewe people of southern Togo and southeastern Ghana -- two countries in West Africa -- are devout believers. The roots of Voodoo have been traced all the way back to Africa before 1100 AD. In his book, A Brief History of Voodoo: Slavery & the Survival of The African Gods, Mr. Andy Antippas gives an overview of this fascinating history. The Yoruba people of Southwestern and eastern Dahomey and Togo/Nigeria founded a great city called Ife.

Voodoo originated in Africa before the slave trade. When the enforced immigration of African slaves brought them to Haiti from different tribes in West Africa, the circumstances for the development of Voodoo began.
