Vomiting: Stomachs
built 254 days ago
Vomiting can be a normal and even healthy event for dogs and cats. Dogs will often eat things that do not agree with them. Cats might need to eliminate hair balls. The purging action of vomiting brings the body back to health. It will eliminate toxins in the stomach.

Vomiting (emesis) is the act of expelling contents from the stomach through the mouth. It's a reflex act, involving a triggering stimulus (such as inflammation of the stomach), the central nervous system and abdominal muscles that work together to expel the contents from the stomach. There are multiple causes of vomiting. An occasional, infrequent isolated episode of vomiting is usually normal.

Vomiting is usually an indication of inflammation or excessive distension of organs, namely those of the digestive tract: esophageus, stomach, intestines and liver. The causes are numerous. Classic causes include poisoning, gastritis, ulcers, gastroenteritis, foreign objects, intestinal obstructions, gastric dilation-torsion or spoiled food.
Vomiting or throwing up is usually a beneficial process to help protect a person from serious injury or even death. The body reacts quickly and violently to rid the stomach of any harmful material. In some cases, like morning sickness, it is an unfortunate side effect that is not beneficial.
Weak Stomach and Vomiting: A gruel of slippery elm is often well-received when all food is ejected. [SNH p.335] Slippery elm gruel (strengthening, soothing and healing of inflamed surfaces): See formula using slippery elm, raw milk, honey and cinnamon or nutmeg. [SNH p.336]
Vomiting is different from regurgitation, although the two terms are often used interchangeably. Regurgitation is the return of undigested food (that has not yet reached the stomach) back up the esophagus to the mouth. The causes of vomiting and regurgitation are generally different.
