Vomiting: Foods
built 254 days ago
Intestinal infections from food poisoning, particularly that due to Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus, produce vomiting soon after ingestion of contaminated food. Other infections can cause vomiting along with diarrhoea รข€” particularly acute viral gastroenteritis due to rotavirus and bacterial diarrhoeas. There is often a clue to the source of infection, especially if there are several sufferers after a common meal or a sequence of contacts. The diagnosis can usually be made by microbiological examination of faeces. These acute infections are usually self-limiting, although in some instances antibiotics may be appropriate.

For typical pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting, reassurance is often all that is needed, although an anti-emetic may be necessary. Traditionally, dietary advice such as dry toast in the morning and avoiding fatty foods was offered. Antacids for reflux symptoms associated with nausea and vomiting may be used. If an anti-emetic is necessary, then antihistamines may be used and are considered safe for use during pregnancy. The efficacy or safety of phenothiazines or metoclopramide have not been established for nausea and vomiting of pregnancy in controlled trials despite their widespread use (11).

Prolonged and excessive vomiting will deplete the body of water (dehydration) and may alter the electrolyte status. The loss of acids leads to metabolic alkalosis (increased blood pH), and the electrolyte imbalance shows hypokalemia (potassium depletion) and hypochloremia (chlorine depletion). The hypokalemia is an indirect result of the kidney compensating for the loss of acid. With the loss of intake of food the individual will become cachectic.

The overeating of dry food can cause vomiting. The reason is that dry food absorbs water and swells, this in turn causes your cat to vomit. (your cats’ eating of wet food as kittens may explain some things). Check the vomit for a semi-solid-partly-digested appearance.

When the vomiting center senses problems such as those above, it initiates the vomiting sequence. Without effort on your part, the windpipe closes and the abdominal wall and diaphragm muscles tighten suddenly and forcefully. The stomach itself is limp, but when squeezed forcefully by the abdominal wall, it ejects any food or fluid up the esophagus and out.
