Vomiting: Cases
built 254 days ago
The most common cause of vomiting in dogs and ferrets (not so in cats) is dietary indiscretions – the eating of garbage, grass, plant leaves, etc. It is amazing the things pets will eat. Many of these are actually separation anxiety cases where a panicky pet eats everything in sight (see article on separation anxiety). Placing these pets on a large dose of petrolatum-based cat laxative helps slide this material out with the stool. These pets need to be monitored carefully for seventy-two hours to be sure the intestine does not block. At the first sign of abdominal distress, depression, general weakness, fever or blood in vomitus or stool, they should be taken to a veterinarian for further testing.

Like any reflex, vomiting involves nerve mechanisms. They may originate in the central nervous system, in other words, directly from the brain (disruption of normal central nervous system functions, inflow of particle substances into the blood, even olfactory stimulus, cause the vomit centre to react). The origin may ... be peripheral, which involves receptors located in abdominal or thoracic organs. Information received is transmitted through a system of neurotransmitters to the vomit centre in the brain. In both cases, this centre responds by triggering the muscular action that causes vomiting.

In most cases you should not be too concerned about your dog vomiting. If you know that the dog got into something or you changed its diet, you can probably wait 24 hours to see if the vomiting clears up, but only if the dog does not appear lethargic. You must withhold food for 24 hours and then gradually start a bland diet. If at any time the dog becomes worse please see your veterinarian
Simple vomiting rarely causes problems, but on occasion, can lead to such serious consequences as aspiration pneumonia. Additionally, severe or repetitive vomition results in disturbances in acid-base balance, dehydration and electrolyte depletion. In such cases, the goal is to rapidly establish a definitive diagnosis of the underlying disease so that specific therapy can be instituted. This is often not easy and in many cases, it is advantageous to administer antiemetic drugs in order to suppress vomition and reduce its sequelae.

Intestinal endometriosis can present with abdominal pain and nausea and vomiting. In a review of 26 cases, abdominal pain was the main presenting feature in 20, with associated nausea and vomiting in 12. Establishing the diagnosis preoperatively was difficult in patients without a known history (72).

Two types of evolution are observed with vomiting. It can either be acute or chronic. In the first case, the vomiting occurs suddenly and is temporary in nature. In the second instance, it builds progressively and is recurrent for over a month. Vomiting occurs more or less frequently during the day and may or may not be related to eating.
