The Volvo S60 is the first Volvo to feature a more fluid look, designed by Peter Horbury. In 2005, exterior changes gave it a leaner, more integrated appearance. The T5 engine received an increase in 10 horsepower and mated to the same 6 speed transmission used by the S60 R.

The Volvo S60 is an established yet unconventional entry in the entry-level luxury sedan market. It competes in a class dominated by cars with normally aspirated V6 engines and bucks the trend by offering a choice of three turbocharged five-cylinder engines instead. Styling is another area in which the Volvo S60 is unique. Even well into its model cycle, this midsize sedan's body lines retain a modern, and pleasing, Scandinavian distinctiveness. Inside, the S60 strikes one as more functional than luxurious in its ambience, but it's hard to find fault with its carefully considered ergonomics and orthopedically designed seats.

The Volvo S60 model range lies within the price bracket of £19,995 - £28,925. The S60 has been awarded a four star NCAP crash test rating by the European New Car Assessment Programme out of a possible five stars. Based on this NCAP rating the S60 fairs fairly well in an accident having been given a high result. Volvo S60 insurance groups start at group 15 and rise to group 17. Base models are above average to insure, whilst the higher specification cars are fairly expensive to insure.

The Volvo S60 2.4 comes with a 2.4-liter five-cylinder engine that produces 168 horsepower (165 in California where it's SULEV-certified). The 2.5T, as you might guess, is turbocharged, and it makes a healthy 208 hp. The 2.5T AWD has the same engine, but power is routed through an electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system. The T5 is the most powerful S60 with its 257-hp, 2.3-liter turbocharged engine. Both the 2.4 and T5 can be equipped with either a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission, while the 2.5T and 2.5T AWD are available only with the automatic. Automanual functionality is available on all models except the 2.4.
