A midsize, entry-level luxury sedan, the 2007 Volvo S60 is one of the more unconventional cars in the $30,000-$40,000 price range. It competes in a class dominated by cars with normally aspirated V6 engines, yet offers a trio of turbocharged five-cylinders instead. Styling is another area in which the S60 stands apart.

The Volvo S60is a midsize sedan which is built on the S80 platform. It’s a solid and capable family sedan. The S60 is known for its spirited performance and handling, though not particularly agile. The front seats are comfortable and the interior is fairly quiet. The ride is stiff and handling is secure and the rear seat is cramped. Although a good car, the S60 falls short in its highly competitive class.

The Volvo S60 was launched in autumn 2000 as a somewhat smaller sedan than the Volvo S80. The design brief was to create a car with the same basic lines and safety as the S80 model, but in a more compact body and with a sportier profile.

Considering its still a part of Volvo's new car line-up, the firm will be unhappy to see the S60 only one place ahead of Vauxhall's old Omega. But it's not all bad news. So perfect are the S60's multi-adjustable seats that you have voted it into the number one spot in the comfort chart. You're ... impressed by the saloon's performance, where it finished 13th. Less praiseworthy is the S60's handling and limited practicality, while its thirst for fuel is a concern for many.

Volvo has developed a self parking car in collaboration with Linköping University"In the project, four ultrasound sensors have been fitted on a Volvo S60, pointing in the directions indicated in the right figure above. When the driver initiates a parking space scan, the system fires and reads the sensors. A number of clever algorithms turn the measurement data into knowledge about the space position and size. When the space is identified and is determined to be large enough for the car, the system tells the driver that a pocket exists. The driver stops and reverses and the prototype electric power steering as well as braking is controlled by the parking computer so that the car is driven into the pocket safely, as shown in the left movie.
