It's impressive in these beginning stages of inflation that the 2005 Volvo S40 is less expensive than the 2004 model it replaces. And this is a real makeover. In the past, a Mitsubishi platform was beneath an S40. This year, it's a Mazda 3 platform... used for the Ford Focus in Europe. Ford owns Volvo now, and, to its credit, has not neutered it as GM is doing with its acquisitions. Not only is the 2005 Volvo S40 one of the safest cars at any price, but it leads the way with some better ideas.

Their design has been acclaimed, their quality has been shown to be top class and, when it comes to safety, these cars have been among the very best in their class. If this was not apparent before, it became obvious in the EuroNCAP test in 1997. Fourteen cars of this size were tested and only the Volvo S40 and V40 were awarded top marks (four stars).

The Volvo S40 and V40 are ... quieter - partly as a result of the upgraded engine suspension. The noise level from engine and wheels has also been reduced using new and improved noise insulation between engine compartment and interior and as a result of the new front suspension. The new common rail diesels and the upgraded turbocharged petrol engines are also quieter than their predecessors.
