The Volvo C70 is a 2-door, front-wheel-drive, 4-passenger convertible. Introduced in 1997, the first-generation C70 featured a power-retractable soft convertible top and a choice of turbocharged 5-cylinder powerplants under the hood. The second-generation C70 debuted in 2006. Unlike its predecessor, the all-new C70 introduced a 3-piece hardtop. Quieter, and with improved outward visibility thanks to its enlarged glass windows, the second-generation C70 delivered a closed coupe experience similar to its open-top persona. For 2008, Volvo has increased power, added some safety features, and made minor cosmetic changes in the passenger cabin.

1997-2002 Volvo C70 convertible The Volvo C70 is a luxury cabriolet built by Volvo Car Corp. The C70 is available in convertible and (originally) coupé versions with a choice of manual or automatic transmission. In the United States prices for the C70 convertible started at $38,710 for the 2006 model year. It is being produced at the Pininfarina Sverige AB plant in Uddevalla, Sweden. This company is owned jointly by Volvo (40%) and Pininfarina SpA of Italy (60%).
Although based on the current S40 platform, the Volvo C70 has a wider track though slightly shorter wheelbase than its predecessor, with fully independent suspension. stability control, anti-lock brakes and emergency braking assist, which fully applies the brakes in panic braking situations, are all standard. Ever true to its standards of security, the Volvo C70 directs impact forces around the passenger compartment. Volvo’s WHIPS and ROPS aren’t some sort of Swedish fetish, but rather systems for whiplash and rollover protection. The former is a special front seat mechanism, the latter rollbars that pop up behind the rear seat when needed. The C70 is the first convertible to have side curtain airbags in a convertible.

Volvo C70 The new Volvo C70 is slightly shorter and lower than its predecessor. This time, Volvo based the second-generation C70 on the same platform used for its contemporary-styled, midsize S40 sedan and V50 wagon. The key update for the new C70 is that there's only one model -- a convertible with a high-end, power-retractable hardtop. When the C70's steel roof is up, it gives the car cleaner coupe styling, added rigidity and better noise isolation. When the roof-lowering process is started, the C70's dual-hinged trunk lid opens in a reverse motion and the roof pieces arc backward and stack inside the trunk. Overall, the process is seamless and takes about 30 seconds to complete.

The all-new Volvo C70 was developed to offer new standards of preventive and protective safety in the convertible market. The car has an advanced body structure and several solutions that make it unique among open-top cars. The lack of a fixed roof has been compensated for by reinforcements in the structure and sophisticated safety technology. One unique example is the new door-mounted inflatable curtain, which is part of the enhanced protection system for side impacts. Since the door-mounted inflatable curtain cannot be fitted within the headliner like other Volvos, it is fitted in the door and inflates upwards when it is deployed.

The Volvo C70 was built in Udevalla, Sweden. It had ... more human involvement during its assembly than the other 70 series cars. The C70 was the earliest modern convertible Volvo that was built, and was introduced as a 1997 model in Europe, and in North America as a 1998 model. The launch of the C70 ensures the quality of a vehicle that was very new to Volvo as it comes with a lot of great features and other optional equipments. The latest C70 model was introduced on April 2006 highlighting the same platform as that of the Ford C1 used in the S40. This model features a three-piece retractable metal hardtop that can be raised or lowered in seconds.
