Volvo C70: Engines
built 631 days ago
The Volvo C70 was available with both low-pressure and high-pressure, 5-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engines and manual and automatic transmissions. Although visually based on the 850, it was actually engineered by Tom Walkinshaw Racing and was a breakthrough design for Peter Horbury.

On the open road, the C70 is a decent cruiser, with power coming from Volvo's 2.5-liter turbocharged 5-cylinder engine. This is the same unit that makes the smaller S40 a veritable sport sedan, but the C70's considerable unloaded weight (3,772 pounds) means that 218 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque are just enough to outrun most minivans.

From the rear, the C70 makes the most of Volvo's design philosophy, as a wide shoulder line flattens the appearance of the big load area. The bootlid itself is a clever piece of engineering; it's double hinged to allow the clamshell to open for the roof and to give access to luggage.
