Volvo C70: Convertibles
built 605 days ago
The Volvo C70 is a kind of compact car which is built by the Ford Motor Company subsidiary - Volvo. It comes in convertible and coupe versions with a choice of manual and automatic transmission. The first generation of Volvo C70 was available with low-pressure and high-pressure 5-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engines. It makes use of manual and automatic transmissions. It was engineered by a certain Tom Walkinshaw and designed by Peter Horbury.

The T5 engine in the Volvo C70 is fun. With the six-speed manual in second, it pulled hard across the rev range with an ever present turbo whistle and five cylinder whoop during acceleration. All the stuff that makes the hardtop convertible work bulks the C70 up to 3,772 pounds but Volvo’s generous torque and lack of torque steer make speed no stranger. (“Speed Is No Stranger would make a good book title, actually).

The 2008 Volvo C70 is only available in T5 trim, which in Volvo nomenclature is a designation reserved for a vehicle with a turbocharged 5-cylinder engine. Standard on all models is a power-operated, 3-piece, retractable hardtop convertible roof that can be raised or lowered in about 30 seconds, Volvo says. In raised position, the top features a large rear heated glass window offering excellent outward visibility, the automaker claims. In base trim, the C70 features a full complement of convenience accessories including power windows, power door locks, cruise control, and dual-zone electronic climate control. The power exterior mirrors are heated, and the interior mirror is auto-dimming. New for 2008 is a standard leather-covered steering wheel and gearshift knob.

Unlike some other convertibles, the Volvo C70 doesn't confine, with ample top-up headroom for those who stand north of 6 feet. Visibility is another pleasant surprise, with lean rear pillars offering good sight lines for reversing drivers. The 2008 Volvo C70 is just as agreeable with the top down, thanks to minimal wind buffeting. It's ... one of the safest convertibles on the market, as it's equipped with side curtain airbags that deploy when the top is lowered. To accomplish this feat, Volvo mounted the airbags in the doors.

The second-generation Volvo C70 made its debut in 2006. But while the original C70 was available as a coupe or a convertible, the new model blended the two body styles into one with Volvo's first retractable hardtop design. The only changes for 2007 consist of improvements to the standard audio system, including the addition of a new auxiliary-input jack, MP3-playback capability for the CD player, and optional Sirius Satellite Radio.

Rather than selling separate closed- and open-top versions of one car, The Volvo C70 splits the difference by offering a single model that comes with a power-operated three-piece retractable hard top. This is similar to the retractable roofs found on other current models like the BMW 3 Series Convertible, Mazda MX-5 Miata, Mercedes-Benz SLK and Volkswagen Eos. At the push of a button, the Volvo C70’s roof folds into three pieces and stows in the rear of the vehicle in about 30 seconds. When raised, the hard top is better at blocking noise and the elements than traditional convertible soft tops.
