Volkswagen New Beetle: New Beetles
built 634 days ago
The New Beetle's driving position is comfortable but weird. You sit a good two feet back from the windshield; at first it's like driving from the back seat. But the seat is height adjustable and the steering column moves up and down as well as in and out, so virtually any driver can get comfy. As for the eensy-weensy back seat, the less said the better. You can get two adults back there, but they probably won't like it much.

Spinning out in a new Volkswagen will become a lot harder later this year. Starting with its 2009 models sold in the U.S., Volkswagen will be adding electronic stability control as a standard feature. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has previously decreed that all vehicles have to be equipped with stability control from 2012 onwards, but VW is getting there early. That makes the German automaker the first non-luxury brand to meet the new standard.

In 2000, two new colors for the New Beetle (Vapor Blue and Reflex Yellow) were introduced in limited quantities. They were tied to a unique marketing campaign that made the new colors only available by ordering online. Although not all of the cars were ultimately sold online, the campaign was successful in driving people to VW's web site.[2]

The New Beetle is as safe as it is adorable. Standard dual front airbags and dual seat-mounted side airbags protect passengers like a cocoon. A standard anti-lock braking system with hydraulic brake assist stops the bug on a dime. Anti-slip regulation help to prevent wheel slippage at all speed, while electronic stability control assists the driver in maintaining control during evasive maneuvers. The standard brake pad wear indicator helps to prevent rotor damage by indicating wear level on the dash, and the tire pressure monitoring system alerts the driver when pressure is getting too low.

The 2012 New Beetle, as anticipated in this rendering from Auto Motor und Sport, will feature a new look, closely inspired by the previous model. The most notable differences are in the front air intake, that is now similar to the one on the Volkswagen Up! concept, and in the new LED front lamps.

Volkswagen of America, Inc. and Apple Computers have dubbed the new initiative: "Pods Unite." The pairing begins today and will be featured prominently in a TV, local radio and newspaper, nationwide print, broadcast media and e-commerce campaign, through the end of September. Sleek iPod displays will ... adorn Volkswagen dealer showrooms.
