The 2008 New Beetle is a 2-door, 4-passenger family coupe, available in 4 trims, ranging from the S to the SE PZEV. Upon introduction, both trims are equipped with a standard 2.5-liter, I5, 150-horsepower engine. A 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard on the S, and a 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is optional. A 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard on the SE PZEV. The 2008 New Beetle is a carryover from 2007.

Editors at Edmunds.com don't directly compare the Volkswagen New Beetle to other subcompact cars, but they do give it a road test and evaluation. Editors say the Beetle is cute and fun to drive, but add that newer subcompact cars have better cargo space and more rear-seat room. The Beetle's rear-seat is cramped for anyone but kids. Between 2001 and 2003 Volkswagen produced 250 limited edition New Beetles with the designation RSi in Mexico for the rest of the World. The RSi was powered by a 225 hp 3.2 liter V6 engine mated to a six-speed gearbox and Volkswagen's all-wheel drive system 4motion. It had a Remus twin-pipe exhaust. The suspension was tuned by Porsche, featuring a severely altered rear suspension geometry more geared to the race track and a rear cross member behind the rear seats. Visually, the RSi differed in its 80 mm (3.1 in) wider fenders, unique front and rear bumpers, a rear diffuser, large rear wing, and 18x9 OZ Superturismo wheels with 235/40ZR-18 tires. Inside, it was trimmed in carbon fiber, billet aluminum, and bright orange leather.
