The Volkswagen New Beetle Turbo S is a terrible car for hauling sheets of plywood back from Home Depot or taking a family of five and their gear on a cross-country camping trip. Of course the same could be said of a Mazda Miata, Porsche Boxster, Corvette or dozens of other cars that have a high fun quotient and little practicality. The Turbo S, in contrast, is high on fun but ... has its practical attributes.

The Volkswagen New Beetle was the cute car that started the retro-futurist design craze, which is still going strong. It was a modernized version of the legendary VW Beetle and struck a chord with consumers who had grown tired of standard conservative car designs and had fond memories of the "Bugs" from their youth.

The 2007 Volkswagen New Beetle doesn't compete well with other subcompact cars when it comes to functionality. All reviews say the rear seat is only comfortable for kids, Cargo space is lacking, particularly on the Beetle convertible. The car is fun to drive, but not sporty. Reliability has only been average, and fuel economy is low compared to other subcompacts like the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris.
