The Volkswagen in Canada--Volkswagen Products were seen in Canada for the first time at the Canadian National Exhibition in 1952 and were accepted enthusiastically. That... is not always a reliable criterion, but by 1955 sales were on a basis that warranted the building of the fine Volkswagen plant on a 32-acre site on Scarboro's Golden Mile. To this, a 60,000 square foot building with administration, showrooms, service, repairs and parts, an addition of 60,000 feet was built in 1957, with storage for $4,000,000 of parts, and greatly increased facilities including a second cafeteria for employees.

Giffels was retained by Volkswagen Canada to design and mechanize a partially automated national distribution centre for storing 55,000 parts. This project began with a project definition and conceptual design, followed by the design of each material handling and storage system. Giffels prepared the detailed specifications, called tenders and issued contracts to the successful bidders for each system. Included were two carousel systems controlled by local PC's and tied to a “server” computer. The conveyor system was integrated with the carousel operations as well as the pick-to-belt high velocity zone and high-bay shelving served by wire-guided order pickers.
