Volcanoes: World

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, established in 1916, is Hawai'i's most visited attraction. The 333,086-acre park reveals steam vents, lava flows, summits and rift zones of two of the world's most active volcanoes, Kîlauea and Maunaloa. Extending from sea level to 13,677 feet, it ... provides habitat to rare and endangered plant, bird, bat and sea turtle species.
Sometimes, when several volcanoes are formed in an area, they will get together and form a band, or "chain" of volcanoes. A prime example of this is the Hawaiian Island chain. At first, they felt they needed each other's support. Now, they feel like they need the entire world's. To remedy this, they erupt often, and each year thousands of annoyed tourists flock to the islands to tell them off.
There are more than 500 active volcanoes in the world. More than half of these volcanoes are part of the "Ring of Fire," a region that encircles the Pacific Ocean. The world's largest active volcano is Mauna Loa in Hawaii. Taller than Mount Everest, Mauna Loa's summit rises 56,000 ft (17,000 m) from its base below sea level.

The site contains a high density of active volcanoes, a variety of different types and a wide range of volcanic features. The Peninsula location between a large continental landmass and the Pacific Ocean ... exhibits unique characteristics with major concentrations of wildlife.

A freshwater island with the highest altitude in the world, Ometepe is in fact an island of twin volcanoes - Maderas and Concepcion - two towering centerpieces connected by an isthmus create an hourglass shaped island. According to historians, indigenous tribes traveled from up north to find a paradise envisioned by prophets. The island was transformed into a sanctuary inhabited by a mix of tribes and cultures as revealed by the immense number of petroglyphs, ceramics, and statues.

There are over 1500 active volcanoes in the world. These have erupted within the last 10,000 years and have a reasonable chance of erupting in the future. In fact, geological records in Hawaii show that some volcanoes can erupt after being dormant for one million years! The largest number of active volcanoes are located around the Pacific Ring of Fire.
