At Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, the current flow conditions happening outside its boundaries haven't deterred visitors from exploring the Park's many attractions. Although the increased activity has elevated sulfur dioxide (SO2) levels at the summit of Kîlauea volcano, and prompted the closure of a four-mile stretch of Crater Rim Drive on Feb. 20, most of the park and plenty of its facilities remain open, including Kîlauea Visitor Center, Jaggar Museum, Volcano House Hotel, Kîlauea Military Camp, Volcano Art Center Gallery, Thurston Lava Tube, Devastation Trail, Kîlauea Iki Trail, Sulphur Banks Trail, Chain of Craters Road, Kulanaokuaiki Campground, and all backcountry campsites.

When active volcanoes are not erupting (in other words, simply dormant), many of them can be approached reasonably closely in safety. However, when visiting active volcanic areas, there are still plenty of hazards even in dormant volcanic areas. New lava flows may still be very hot for months or even years afterwards and may be only covered with a thin crust of solid rock. Old lava flows can be as sharp as broken glass, so wearing a good pair of shoes or hiking boots are a must.

Some types of volcanoes are easily recognizable and some are not. The "Hollywood" types are easily recognized. Many are located in populated areas and have well-known names: Vesuvius, Krakatoa, Fujiyama, and Mount St. Helens. These volcanoes are typically tens of miles across and ten thousand or more feet in height. As illustrated in the figure above, they have moderately steep sides and sometimes have small craters in their summits. Volcanologists call these "strato-" or composite volcanoes because they consist of layers of solid lava flows mixed with layers of sand- or gravel-like volcanic rock called cinders or volcanic ash.

Most composite volcanoes have a crater at the summit which contains a central vent or a clustered group of vents. Lavas either flow through breaks in the crater wall or issue from fissures on the flanks of the cone. Lava, solidified within the fissures, forms dikes that act as ribs which greatly strengthen the cone.
