Volcanoes are large bulges in the earth's crust where the very ground itself opens in a melodramatic burst of annoying lava, ash, and angst. In other words, they are like mountains, but scientists like to talk about them. This is because the volcanoes are annoying little attention whores.

Volcanoes are awesome manifestations of the fiery power contained deep within the Earth. These formations are essentially vents on the Earth's surface where molten rock, debris, and gases from the planet's interior are emitted.

Volcanoes are known for their violent eruptions and lava flows, but there are many benefits that volcanoes provide for society. Volcanoes help enrich soil for farming and in some cases provide reservoirs for the storage of ground water (Chester 186). Moreover the earth's valuable resources are formed in volcanoes. These elements include fluorine, sulfur, zinc, copper, lead, arsenic, tin, molybdenum, uranium, tungsten, silver, mercury, and gold (Chester 186). Society makes use of all of these elements that volcanoes help to provide. Geothermal power is an alternate energy source that is better for the environment and volcanoes provide this to society ....

Volcanoes are generally found where tectonic plates are pulled apart or come together. A mid-oceanic ridge, for example the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, has examples of volcanoes caused by "divergent tectonic plates" pulling apart; the Pacific Ring of Fire has examples of volcanoes caused by "convergent tectonic plates" coming together. By contrast, volcanoes are usually not created where two tectonic plates slide past one another. Volcanoes can ... form where there is stretching and thinning of the Earth's crust (called "non-hotspot intraplate volcanism"), such as in the African Rift Valley, the Wells Gray-Clearwater Volcanic Field and the Rio Grande Rift in North America and the European Rhine Graben with its Eifel volcanoes.

Volcanoes provide a multitude of benefits that unfortunately bring high risks with them. Do volcanoes have a positive or negative effect on society? The answer to this question does not have a black and white answer. There are the positive effects of enriched soil and their help in creating earth's early atmospheres and minerals. The negative effects seem to over power the positive ones on the short term. The risk of possible death and serious injury is frightening, but not that common of an effect.

Harder - Volcanoes occur along the earth's tectonic plates where molten rock is forced upward from magma reservoirs deep in the earth. The magma may be fifty to one hundred miles below the ground. As the magma rises, it gives off gases that cause an explosion in the vents of the volcano. Lava can reach temperatures of over 2000 degrees F. Molten rock, dust, and gases push through the opening in the earth's crust and form a mountain. A violent explosion can cause the top of the volcano to blow off leaving a deep crater.
