A Vodafone McLaren-Mercedes driven by Lewis Hamilton. Vodafone has some large minority stakes, which are not included in its consolidated turnover. In order to provide additional information on the overall scale and growth trends of its business it publishes "proportionate turnover" figures and these are included in the tables below. For example, if a business in which it owns a 45% stake has turnover of £10 billion, that equals £4.5 billion of proportionate turnover for Vodafone. Proportionate turnover is not an official accounting measure and Vodafone's proportionate turnover should be compared with other companies' statutory turnover.

Vaodafone logo Using SAS, Vodafone Information Systems' employees are now able to bring together data from a wide range of sources with a few mouse clicks and to create sophisticated reports in a very short period of time. At the heart of the new system is SAS, which allows IT system managers to have a single point of control over all the IT processes. Measurement data from sources, including HP OpenView, ARS Remedy and IBM Tivoli and CCMS data from SAP R/3 (via the SAS IT Management Adapter for SAP) can all be extracted automatically and consolidated in a data warehouse. The ETL interfaces supplied by SAS ensure that the data import process is simple and efficient. The data warehouse currently contains less than 10 gigabytes of data.

Hardly anyone questions Vodafone's optimism about the growth potential of mobile telephony in rural India. In fact, Sarin has expressed a desire to ... acquire the 33% stake held by Mumbai's Essar group, and if that doesn't pan out, he is keen on forging a successful partnership with the Ruia family that runs the group. "Given that technological uncertainty, rapid change and disruptive innovation are a way of life in the mobile industry, it is almost certain that companies such as Vodafone are making big ICT (information, communications and technology) investments factor in the intangibles," says Bapna. He says "the real option value" for Vodafone to gain a presence "in the world's hottest market" cannot be underestimated. "Investors are placing a premium on being there," he says. "ICT investments tend to pay off in new and unexpected ways over time for those who make the initial investments and have the ability to respond in an agile fashion."
