Vivien Merchant Born Ada Thompson in Manchester, Vivien Merchant was a leading actress and television star who came into the limelight in the mid-1950s as a leading light of the British stage and film industry. She made her first appearance on stage at the Peterborough Repertory Theatre at the age of 14 as an orphan in their staging of "Jane Eyre".
Vivien Merchant (born July 22, 1929 in Manchester, England; died October 3, 1982) was a British actress, who was born Ada Thompson. She performed in many stage productions and films, including Alfie (1966) and Frenzy (1972).
Alfie won a Golden Globe for Best English-Language Foreign Film and a Special Jury Prize at Cannes, while Vivien Merchant received the BAFTA for Most Promising Newcomer. In addition, the film was nominated for five Oscars - Actor, Supporting Actress (Merchant), Original Song, Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay - and six BAFTAs - Actor, Cinematography, Film, Screenplay, Editing and Most Promising Newcomer.
Vivien Merchant brought power and sexual presence to Lady Macbeth, and there was great strength in the rest of the cast. Other cast members who attracted good notices included: Ian Richardson as Malcolm, Sebastian Shaw as Duncan and Brewster Mason as Banquo.
