In May 2001, Vivien received the 1st Place "Best Spot News" award from the Missouri Associated Press for "Meramec River Accident." The same story was ... awarded a St. Louis Regional Emmy and a "Best of Gannett." She also received a "Best Spot News" award from the Texas Associated Press for her coverage of the Matamoros Prison Riot in Mexico. She has received a "Best Serious Feature" Award from Women in Communication. Vivien was selected as a finalist for the Vivian Castleberry Award from the TV News Association for Women Journalists' Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter in 1998. In 2005 she received an award from the Autism Society of Maine recognizing her reporting on Autism and other related disorders.

By the early 1960s Vivien had suffered two miscarriages, and the severity of the tuberculosis was incapacitating. She starred in a 1963 Broadway musical adaptation of <em>Tovarich</em>, a production for which Leigh won a Tony Award. She was preparing to star in the London production of A Delicate Balance when she was found dead from tuberculosis in her London apartment in 1967.

Critics called Leigh's performance flawless and brilliant, and she went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actress. The film won several other Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and over the years its fame has hardly diminished. From relative obscurity, the name of Vivien Leigh became known worldwide.
