Vitamin C: People
built 270 days ago
Large doses of vitamin C can cause stomach upset, diarrhea, or kidney stones. The upper levels for vitamin C is 2,000 milligrams (mg) per day for adults. People should not routinely go above the set upper levels for vitamins and minerals. An upper level is not the recommended amount to take. It is the maximum amount of a vitamin or mineral that is likely to cause no health risks. Some scientists think not enough is known about mega dosing, or taking extremely high doses of vitamins, to claim that it has health benefits.

Vitamin C is the most widely taken supplement in developing countries. It is available in pills, powders, effervescent tablets, syrups and pastilles. Ascorbic acid is the most widely used and least expensive form, but it causes stomach upsets in some people and can damage tooth enamel. Calcium ascorbate and sodium ascorbate are ... readily available and are less likely to have these effects. Some supplements provide vitamin C in the form of C complex which contains bioflavonoids. These compounds occur naturally with vitamin C and, in high enough doses, increase its activity.

Prior to the discovery of vitamin C, a disease called scurvy affected people who had little access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Scurvy was particularly common among sailors away at sea for months at a time. When it was discovered that eating limes could prevent scurvy, British sailors were nicknamed "Limeys." Later, vitamin C was discovered and was used to prevent and treat scurvy. Today, vitamin C supplements are taken to ensure that an individual meets the daily requirement of vitamin C, even if the diet is poor.

Could high doses of vitamin C be an effective treatment for SARS? Toronto physician Fred Hui believes that administering vitamin C intravenously is a treatment worth trying. The advantages: It's cheap, available and relatively free of side effects. The disadvantages: Nobody knows if it works. Nevertheless, Hui would like to see people who are quarantined taking Vitamin C in high doses. And he'd like to see people admitted to hospital for the pneumonia-like virus treated with the vitamin intravenously while ... receiving the usual

Vitamin C works together with other antioxidants like selenium, beta-carotene, and vitamin E to protect the eyes against developing macular degeneration. This is a painless, degenerative eye disease that affects more than 10 million Americans. It is the leading cause of legal blindness in persons over the age of 55 in the United States. While complete blindness does not occur in most people with the disorder, macular degeneration often interferes with reading, driving, or performing other daily activities.

World production of synthesised vitamin C is currently estimated at approximately 110,000 tonnes annually. Main producers today are BASF/Takeda, DSM, Merck and the China Pharmaceutical Group Ltd. of the People's Republic of China. China is slowly becoming the major world supplier as its prices undercut those of the US and European manufacturers.[97]
