Vitamin C: Levels

STABILITY The stability of STAY-C Dry Mixture during feed manufacturing and storage permits vitamin C fortification at nutritional levels without extensive overages. Because the product is hygroscopic, it should be stored in the original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry place. It can be stored in the original, unopened container for 12 months.

The effects of vitamin C treatment (14 mg/kg/hr) on postburn lipid peroxidation were evaluated in 12 dogs. A lymph duct above the ankle was cannulated bilaterally. Hourly lymph flow rates, plasma and lymph total protein concentrations, and plasma and lymph malondialdehyde concentrations were measured before the burn injury and for 24 hours after the burn injury. Four groups were employed: nonburn without treatment, nonburn with vitamin C treatment, burn without treatment, and burn with vitamin C treatment. The nonburn groups showed no significant differences in lymph flow rates, total protein flux, or lymph malondialdehyde level. In the burn groups the postburn hourly lymph flow rate increased by 850% without treatment and by 500% with vitamin C treatment, whereas the postburn hourly total protein flux increased by fiftyfold and twentyfold, respectively.

Maturity state and position on the tree: Vitamin C decreases during the ripening process. Immature fruit has the highest levels. The position on the tree ... affects vitamin C levels. Since sunlight exposure enhances vitamin C levels, fruit positioned on the outside of the tree and on the south side have higher levels. Shaded inside fruit has the lowest.

Vitamin C is antiviral and antibacterial, but its most potent effect is to enhance immunity. It increases white blood cell activity, interferon production, and thymic hormone secretion. Levels of vitamin C are quickly depleted during infection.

The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) has been replaced by a DRI for vitamin C in the year 2000. In 1989 the RDA was established at 60 mg for adults. This level was believed to be sufficient enough to maintain body pool levels at 1500 mg and does not differ from that established in 1980. A RDA for smokers was established in 1989 at 100 mg/day. This greater RDA was established because smokers have a higher turnover rate of vitamin C versus non-smokers (13). The DRI does not differentiate the need between smokers and non-smokers.

Niacin (Vitamin B3) is a well-known anti-atherosclerotic agent that helps to control blood lipid levels. Niacin is found in mackerel, swordfish, chicken, liver. Niacin is made in the body from l-tryptophan, so if you eat eggs, you’ll eventually get some from there.
