Vitamin C: Diseases
built 270 days ago
The study further suggested that Vitamin C reduces the risk of cataracts because it acts as an antioxidant. Antioxidants are compounds that protect the body from the formation of oxygen free-radicals -- unstable oxygen molecules that can line the interior of blood vessels... restricting blood flow. The formation of free radicals can lead to an array of diseases. Vitamin C in particular may also protect the eye against damage from sunlight.
Just released, the new Levy book surveys the massive scientific evidence connecting dietary vitamin C deficiency with the cause of the circulartory condition commonly called heart disease. The disease condition is characterized by atherosclerotic plaque build-ups in arteries leading to angina, heart attack and stroke.

A minority of medical and scientific opinion continues to see vitamin C as being a low cost and safe way to treat infectious disease and to deal with a wide range of poisons. A megadose of one-half gram per pound of body weight (one gram per kilogram of body weight) per day of sodium ascorbate salt has been found of theraputic use in both human and veterinary treatments.
For several years now it has been known that Vitamin D in cell cultures slows down the production of the `dehydration` hormone. Scientists from the University of Bonn, in co-operation with the Bad Oeynhausen Heart Centre, have now been studying the causes of cardiac failure. They detected `clear indications` that vitamin D deficiency contributes to the emergence of the disease.
DESIGN-A subgroup analysis of the on-trial antioxidant vitamin intake database acquired in the Cholesterol Lowering Atherosclerosis Study, a randomized, placebo-controlled, serial angiographic clinical trial evaluating the risk and benefit of colestipol-niacin on coronary artery disease progression. SETTING-Community- and university-based cardiac catheterization laboratories.
