Darlene is the marketing director for a company that makes vision inspection equipment used in a variety of industrial applications. One customer makes disks that are soft and subject to distortion with mechanical inspection of the disk diameter. This customer has complained that the visual inspection equipment is not performing as well as it did in the past. In particular, there are errors in some of the values for the diameter of the unit in question.

Vision inspection can bring both accuracy and speed to the electronic test process. So, how do you select an inspection method that meets your needs? A lot depends on the application. In electronic assembly, pick-and-place processes have different needs from AOI, x-ray, or layer-upon-layer bare-board inspection. Analog cameras often are selected for pick-and-place to ensure proper component position. But sometimes it is the machine that is the cause of the problem.

Spendlow says, “Costs are far ranging and usually do not include the platform or rewinder the inspection equipment is ultimately mounted to. Strobes vary greatly but could be considered a minimum requirement, starting below $1,000. AB Graphic International provides a wide series of vision inspection equipment on or off press that can be integrated to almost any rewinder or printing press. This type of system starts at $40,950. Larger bespoke fully integrated vision systems for pharma applications with rewinders can cost upwards of $200,000.”

Peterson brings a background in industrial sales to his position, having worked with NAC Image Technology and various other remote vision inspection equipment product lines since 1998. His background began in Nondestructive Testing where Peterson learned about imaging requirements for research and development documentation along with the need for capturing high-speed images for analysis.

Several types of inspection equipment are available to converters, from the simple to the complex. On the basic side are handheld or press mounted strobe lights that help operators to visually inspect the printed product. A step above that are the camera based sampling systems that capture areas of the web. These video web inspection devices are the most prevalent in narrow web, according to John Thome, general manager for BST Pro Mark in Elmhurst, IL, USA. He says, “Those systems are used in 70 percent of narrow web presses out there.”
