Vision is the last sense to develop. In utero, eyelids remain closed until about the 26th week in order for the retinas to fully develop. Around week 26, the eyes open and even begin to blink! At birth, a baby's vision is perfectly focused from 8 to 12 inches.
Low Vision Booklet Vision objectives are included for the first time in Healthy People 2010, the nation's health agenda that identifies opportunities to improve the health of all Americans. "It's a real milestone," said Rosemary Janiszewski, Director of the National Eye Health Education Program. "This addition to Healthy People will finally put vision on the public health agenda." Most states and many localities use the Healthy People framework to guide local health policies and programs.

Vision problems are not always evident by simply looking at a child. The screening process helps detect conditions such as misaligned eyes, cataracts and problems that need correction with eyeglasses. With each day that eye problems go undetected and untreated, a child's vision may deteriorate to the point of irreversibility.
