Among the five senses, people depend on vision and hearing to provide the primary cues for conducting the basic activities of daily life. At the most basic level, vision and hearing permit people to navigate and to stay oriented within their environment. These senses provide the portals for language, whether spoken, signed, or read. They are critical to most work and recreation and allow people to interact more fully. For these reasons, vision and hearing are defining elements of the quality of life. Either, or both, of these senses may be diminished or lost because of heredity, aging, injury, or disease.

So he can’t literally see the halter you’re hiding behind your back when you enter the pasture. But he can recognize your characteristic halter-hiding walk.

Because vision and hearing are such vital senses, screening programs for vision and hearing problems are used in the neonatal intensive care units (NICU). Babies who are at risk are tested for loss of vision and hearing so that treatment or therapy can be started right away.

Hearing and vision tests are given routinely to children to check that their senses are developing properly. As well as checking that vision and hearing are normal for the age of the child, they look for any treatable conditions that make it difficult to hear or see, such as glue ear or a squint. The tests ... help to check for any problems that might cause them to have an effect on their hearing or vision in the future.
