The agency trains staff and provides a wide selection of low vision aids, closed circuit televisions (CCTVs), hand-held scanners, special lamps, and large print books. One feature at NAVH headquarters is the "fun room," 600- square feet of space "chock full of goodies," Marchi says, referring to the CCTVs, adaptive devices, and other equipment used to assist those who have difficulty seeing well. The organization is ... helping to evaluate a new type of lighting for the visually impaired.

Recently a number of computer programs for vision therapy have become available. These programs offer very useful help for parents carrying out vision therapy at home, in conjunction with an optometrist. However, a computer program for vision therapy cannot provide many of the features of supervised optometric vision therapy, to help a child or adult to achieve more normal visual function and processing to reach their potential. Such computer programs should only be used as part of an overall vision therapy program. They do not work as effectively as necessary if used at home without close professional supervision.

Dr. Spitzberg noted the importance to both the AOA and AAO that people with low vision be treated and served using vision rehabilitation services under Medicare and other medical insurance plans. "Our organizations both want national uniform guidelines applied for this medical service, and we stand here together to represent this unity," he said. "These services treat persons with moderate impairments from 20/70 vision to the profoundly impaired."

Specialists in the University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences evaluate the results of the vision screenings. Parents receive the results of the screening within two to four weeks after they are conducted. If a possible vision problem is detected, a letter of referral and a list of optometrists and ophthalmologists in their local area are provided.

In the Child & Teen Checkups program, the components of vision screening are provided by both the health care provider (HCP) and the medical assistant or nurse. For example, the vision health history, the muscle balance screening (observation, corneal light reflex, cross cover and external ocular movements [... called fix and follow]), red reflex and pupillary light response are performed by the HCP. Screening with visual acuity charts and stereo acuity test is often conducted by the medical assistant or nurse. For more information regarding C&TC roles, visit the following links.
