Vision is the process in which light waves from an object being looked at are registered, interpreted and stored as an image by the brain. For this to happen, the light waves pass through the cornea, pupil and lens of the eye. The light waves are then projected onto the retina, which is located at the back of the eye. The optic nerve behind the retina picks up the signals from the nerve endings in the retina and relays them to parts of the brain that process the image and make it recognizable.
Vision Conservation Vision is one of the most powerful weapons in a Soldier's arsenal. An eye injury can happen to any Soldier, of any rank, in any line of work. Ninety percent of all eye injuries are preventable. Therefore, it is important to train personnel and supervisors about vision safety and conservation, including the use of proper eye safety devices.
Vision changes can occur for several reasons. Nuclear sclerosis is a condition which makes the eye lens appear cloudy and bluish which may make it difficult for your dog to focus on objects close up. Cataracts and glaucoma are other conditions which can be more serious and can even lead to blindness. Contact your veterinarian if you notice any of the following signs or any sudden changes in the appearance of your dog's eyes or his vision: cloudy appearance to the eyes, dilated pupils, glowing appearance to the eyes, red eyes, tripping or knocking into furniture or walls.
Vision is a dominant process in the growth, development and daily performance of children. Good vision includes healthy eyes, age appropriate visual acuity, visual integration and visual skills such as eye teaming, eye focusing and eye motility. Optometrists can evaluate these components and help ensure your child reaches his or her potential.

Glaucoma is often referred to as the “silent thief”, because most individuals with undiagnosed glaucoma do not suffer from any symptoms until they begin to notice a reduction in their peripheral vision. Technically, glaucoma is due to damage to the optic nerve, sometimes as a result of increased pressure of the aqueous humor, the clear, watery fluid that circulates in the chamber of the eye between the cornea and the lens. But the term glaucoma is now defined as a collection of diseases that causes optic nerve damage. As a result, the diagnosis is no longer solely based on whether a person’s Intraocular Pressure (IOL) is elevated or not.
While important strides have been made in the prevention and treatment of eye disease, there is no cure for many causes of vision loss, particularly AMD. In addition to being a leading cause of blindness in the United States, AMD is a leading cause of low vision. People with low vision often cannot perform daily routine activities, such as reading the newspaper, preparing meals, or recognizing faces of friends. The inability to see well affects functional capabilities and social interactions and can lead to a loss of independence.
