Viruses, worms, Trojans and all sorts of malware are among the most common and insidious threats today. They can crash entire networks and cause millions of dollars in losses. Come here for news and advice about the latest outbreaks and attacks.
Viruses are pieces of code that install themselves onto your computer for malicious purposes. Viruses are designed to replicate themselves, spreading from computer to computer. Since the Internet is made up of millions of computers connected to each other, viruses thrive in the online world.

Viruses almost always rely on human interaction to infect your system and spread to other computers. At one time it was simple enough to send a virus as an attachment to an e-mail and expect that the person reading the e-mail would open the attachment. As people began to learn about not opening unknown attachments, the virus writers started to use social engineering to get users to open them. The "I Love You" virus was one of the first of these. If you were to get an attachment that looks to be a note from an admirer, you would be more likely to open it.
Viruses in the Windows world are typically addressed by antivirus software vendors. These vendors produce virus definitions used by their antivirus software to recognize viruses on the system. Once a specific virus is identified, the software attempts to quarantine or remove the virus — or at least inform the user of the infection so that some kind of response may be made to protect the system from the virus.
Viruses can be spread via floppy disks or CDs, email attachments, or in material downloaded from the Web, although the majority of viruses are spread through email. When the attachment is opened, the virus is activated and the computer becomes infected.
