Clean Access does ... accept other popular brands of anti-virus software. The latest versions of the following software packages should also work: McAfee Anti-Virus, McAfee Security Center, Norton Anti-Virus, Norton Internet Security, AVAST!, AVG, Sophos, and Computer Associates Easy Anti-Virus. While these packages should also work, CSD and the CSD Helpdesk are only able to provide very limited assistance with these additional products.

Most programs have a feature that allows you to schedule your anti-virus software to automatically download new virus protection files (for example, in the Symantec product licensed by MU this feature is called LiveUpdate). This protects your machine against the newest threats. You need to make sure to schedule the updates at a time when you know the computer will be powered on.

WITS now provides Symantec Anti-Virus software free to current students who connect their computers to ResNet and BlitzNet. You will have the opportunity to download and install the software as part of the network registration process. It is configured to check each file you use, scan your disk each week, and check Symantec's server for updated virus information each day.

Murray State University has a campus-wide agreement with McAfee for the use of its anti-virus software on-campus. Individual departments wishing to install McAfee software can do so at little or no charge to them for the software. While many computers come to campus with other anti-virus software programs, McAfee is the supported software on campus.

While installing anti-virus software is one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect your computer, it has its limitations. Because it relies on signatures, anti-virus software can only detect viruses that have signatures installed on your computer, so it is important to keep these signatures up to date. You will still be susceptible to viruses that circulate before the anti-virus vendors add their signatures, so continue to take other safety precautions as well.
