4. West Nile Virus -- Humans
   The only human epidemic of West Nile Virus infection that has been well-studied occurred in Romania in the late summer of 1996. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, certainly the premier infectious disease control agency in the world, assisted in the evaluation and control of that epidemic and recently published a report in The Lancet, the leading British medical journal.

   According to the CDC, West Nile virus (WNV) is a potentially serious illness. Experts believe WNV is established as a seasonal epidemic in North America that flares up in the summer and continues into the fall. About one in 150 people infected with WNV will develop severe illness. The severe symptoms can include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis. These symptoms may last several weeks, and neurological effects may be permanent. Up to 20 percent of the people who become infected have symptoms such as fever, headache, and body aches, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes swollen lymph glands or a skin rash on the chest, stomach and back.

7. Varicella -- Varicella Zoster Virus
   Varicella is a highly communicable viral disease with worldwide distribution. In temperate climates of the Northern Hemisphere, varicella occurs mainly in the period from late winter to early spring. Secondary attack rates reach close to 90% in susceptible household contacts. Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is the causative agent and is transmitted by droplets, aerosol or direct contact, and patients are usually contagious from a few days before rash onset until the rash has crusted over. Once a case has occurred in a susceptible population, it is very hard to prevent an outbreak. As subclinical infection is rare, the disease is experienced by almost every human being.
8. West Nile Virus -- Birds
   West Nile Virus (WNV) is a virus that is spread by infected mosquitoes. The virus usually infects birds, but it can be spread to humans by mosquitoes that feed on infected birds and then bite humans. The virus cannot be spread by person-to-person contact.

   West Nile virus (WNV) is a disease mostly affecting birds. It is spread among birds by mosquitoes. Mosquitoes get the virus from biting infected birds and then can pass it on to other birds, animals, or people. These mosquitoes can sometimes bite a person, but most people do not become very sick. In some people, West Nile Virus can cause encephalitis, or swelling of the brain.
