Virtual Woman is a software program that combines elements of a chatterbot, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, a video game, and a virtual human. It claims to be the oldest form of virtual life in existence, as it has been continuously running or in use since the late 1980s. Recent releases of the program can update their intelligence by connecting online and downloading newer personalities and histories.

Virtual Woman is still in its beta version, which ... runs smoothly enough. It is intended that the final version will allow users to save their Virtual Women and trade them using specially created Digital DNA files – but we’re not at that stage just yet. Virtual Woman has nice graphics and lots of options to play around with.. Unfortunately, it is not possible to program her to say or do particular things, apart from teaching her your name and updating her knowledge of current events for the Virtual Woman site. Still, she’s a neat plaything who can hold her own in any conversation!

Virtual Woman's current publishing company, CyberPunk Software, claims that over one million copies of Virtual Woman are in existence. Software sales and usage statistics from private companies are notoriously difficult to verify. However WinSite, an independent Internet shareware distribution site that does publish public download counts, has for some time now listed some version of Virtual Woman in their top ten shareware downloads of all time with over one half a million downloads.

Virtual Woman is a large (26 Mo) download, containing the graphic, artificial intelligence and speech elements. If you have a dial-up Internet connection, you’ll probably want to use a download manager such as GetRight to avoid any unpleasant interruptions while downloading. Once the download is finished, you discover the Virtual Woman software in two stages: build your Virtual Woman, then chat with her and hear her voice.
