Virtual Pets are fake or make-believe pets. They origianated as hand held toys that you could nurture, take care of, and watch grow up. You may of have heard of a Tamagotchi. A Tamagotchi ("tom-ah-got-chee") is a "virtual pet" that lives on a tiny LCD screen on a keychain. "Tamago" is Japanese for "egg," and "Tomodatchi" means "friend". So the word literally means "egg-friend."

Until now, virtual pets (Tamagotchi, Nintendogs) have taught a generation of young Americans that caring for your dog is accomplished by pressing various buttons to keep him from beeping too loudly. Needless to say, it’s not the best lesson for real pet (or, Heavens no!) child care.
