Virtual Hosting: Servers

In IP-based virtual hosting... called dedicated IP hosting, each virtual host has a different IP address. The web server is configured with multiple physical network interfaces, or virtual network interfaces on the same physical interface. The web server software uses the IP address the client connects to in order to determine which web site to show the user. The primary reason for a site to use a dedicated IP is to be able to use its own SSL certificate rather than a shared certificate.

Shared -- This is the most common model for Virtual Hosting. A file directory is set up for each domain. Each domain "shares" certain resources, including the web server, mail server, and other key server software components. Each hosting account has a limited ability to run processes for their own use. Shared hosting has significant disadvantages, a few of which are listed below:

There are two ways to implement Virtual Hosting – Shared hosting and Virtual Private Server (VPS). In the case with Virtual Private Server, software innovation has been used to create a virtual server that performs as if it were a full server dedicated to the exclusive use of each account. The Virtual Private Server Hosting may become a superior hosting solution that features such advantages as security, insulation and control.

Besides the attractiveness of customized URLs, a second benefit of virtual hosting is the ability to publish to the 'root directory' of your bucket's virtual server. This can be important because many existing applications search for files in this standard location. For example, favicon.ico, robots.txt, crossdomain.xml, are all expected to be found at the root.

In this example, the virtual hosts www.gryffindor.com and www.slytherin.com each get their own JVM. The first step is the configuration and startup of the back-end, host specific instances of Resin. The second step is the by the configuration of the front-end server that dispatches requests to the appropriate back-end JVM.

Virtual hosts can be specified one of two ways. These are configuration differences on the server, and are not visible to the client--that is, there is no way that the user can tell what sort of virtual host they are using. Or even that they are using a virtual host, for that matter.
