Virtua Tennis is Sega's first foray into the racket-swinging, fast-serving world of professional tennis. Players pick their favorite international stars and then battle it out around the world on grass, clay and hard courts. The game is structured almost like a fighting game style. The scoring for individual games is traditional, with the love-15-30-40-Duece progression that those familiar with the sport will understand. But instead of full sets, players must win two games on the default setting to be declared the winner.

The PS3 version of Virtua Tennis 3 has a bunch of extra gameplay features. One worth mentioning is the unique tilt functionality that allows players to spin, lob and slice the ball with a flick of the SIXAXIS. However, lobs are pretty much worthless while volleying won't do you much good either, as it's sometimes better to just use classical attempts to return a ball to the adversary's court, such as top spin shots, or sliced shots.

The core gameplay of Virtua Tennis works pretty well on the GBA. It employs a two button control scheme which should be familiar to Virtua Tennis vets as well as being easy enough for anyone new to the game. The A and B buttons control your slice and topspin shot and the combo of both buttons yields a lob which you can unleash on an unsuspecting opponent who is crowding the net. The gameplay, just the Dreamcast version, is top notch. Timing plays a key role in your offense as you can pretty much hold down the button from almost anywhere on the court to buffer your swing. You will have to decide whether you want go for the quicker release or the set up shot to position your opponent hopefully right where you want them.

Virtua Tennis is compelling for the way it blends extremely life-like animation and fantastic TV-style graphics with easy-to-learn controls that belie a powerful simulation of the sport. Success comes down to good, early positioning and a well-timed stroke - something that begins easily enough but becomes increasingly challenging as you come up against faster and stronger opponents.
