Virtua Racing: Virtua Racing Deluxe
built 276 days ago
An upgraded version, Virtua Racing Deluxe, was released in 1994 for the 32X. It performed much closer to the original arcade, included two extra cars ("Stock" and "Prototype") and two new tracks ("Highland" and "Sand Park"). Due to the poor sales of the 32X, the game was not as popular as its Sega Genesis predecessor.
Top speeds in Virtua Racing Deluxe can only be achieved by driving a car with a manual transmission. Practice shifting gears in the time attack mode to overcome the initial awkwardness of using a stick shift.

The 32X was, contrary to popular belief, a superb piece of hardware, as top games like Virtua Racing Deluxe and Doom testify. The problem was that Sega misread the market, and assumed that the millions of MegaDrive/Genesis owners would be happy to upgrade to 32-Bit at a lower, more affordable price than the route offered by the PS or SS. Unfortunately, while that should have happened, the Saturn and more so the PlayStation, grabbed all the limelight and with it, the imagination of the gaming public. And so the 32X was seen as the poor man's console which nobody wanted. Even though they couldn't afford one, they preferred to dream of owning a PS than actually owning a 32X. It's a shame this happens, and due to it's relative failure and the fact that Sega were having a nightmare trying to get to grips with the Saturn, not a lot of truly great games were made for 32X.
