built 632 days ago
Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) The Honorable Dr. Donald C. Winter tours the fast-attack submarine USS Virginia (SSN 774) off the coast of Florida. Virginia is the first submarine of the nuclear-powered Virginia-class. She is 377 feet in length, has a waterline beam of 34 feet, a navigational draft of 32 feet, and displaces approximately 7,800 tons submerged. She can dive to depths greater than 800 feet, and can sustain speeds of more than 25 knots when submerged.

Accelerating production of Virginia class attack submarines to two per year in 2009 will generate economies of scale—the economic condition when the per-unit cost of producing an item declines with the number of units made. Industry officials are confident they can meet the Navy’s goal of $2 billion per submarine if two submarines are produced per year.

The Virginia Class submarine will be armed with a variety of weapons, including the most advanced heavyweight torpedoes, mines, Tomahawk cruise missiles, and Unmanned Undersea Vehicles (UUVs) for horizontal launch. In addition, Tomahawk missiles will be carried in vertical launch tubes. The submarine ... features an integral Lock-Out/Lock-In chamber for special operations, and can host Special Operations Forces underwater delivery vehicles.

Virginia She floats right below the surface, waiting to strike -- lethal near the shore or in the deep ocean, the nuclear-powered Virginia-Class is the quietest and most advanced submarine in the world. Think you're safe in the shallow end? Think again.

The Virginia-class attack submarines (SSN) are the first U.S. submarines to be designed for battlespace dominance across a broad spectrum of regional and littoral missions. They complement the Seawolf class submarine's capabilities for open-ocean, "blue water" missions.
The Virginia Class submarine is being designed for multi-mission operations and enhanced operational flexibility. Seawolf Class quieting is being incorporated in a smaller hull, while military performance will be maintained or improved.
