Virginia Beach: Captain John Smith
built 263 days ago
Virginia Beach was first discovered by Europeans in 1607, by Captain John Smith. Covered in native pine forests, and with good beaches, the Captain then founded the New World's first permanent settlement, Jamestown, up the nearby James River.

In the spring of 1607, Captain John Smith landed at Cape Henry, which is now the northern tip of Virginia Beach, and witnessed the white sandy beaches and pine forests beyond. Before sailing up the James River to establish Jamestown, he and his band of explorers planted a cross on the shore to give thanks for their safe voyage. This spot is commemorated at First Landing State Park, where a replica of the cross can be seen.

The first documented European explorer to set foot on Virginia Beach was Captain John Smith, who arrived on April 26, 1607. However, unlike other Virginia towns that are steeped in history, Virginia Beach is geared more toward the present. It has evolved into the quintessential beach town, lined with high-rise hotels, tourist shops, seafood restaurants and a bustling boardwalk.
