Virgil: Virgil Earp
built 657 days ago
Virgil Earp was Tombstone's marshal and deputy U.S. marshal for the area. He was shot through the calf in the gunfight. Two months later he was severely wounded in an attempt by the outlaws to murder him. Six inches of bone had to be removed from his left arm, crippling him for life.
In February 1860, Virgil (who was 17) eloped with Dutch immigrant Magdalena C. "Ellen" Rysdam who was born in Utrecht, Netherlands. They were married for a year even though her parents, Gerrit Rysdam and Magdalena Catrina Van Velzen, totally disapproved of it. Their short union had resulted in the birth of their only child, Nellie Jane Earp. She was only two weeks old when Virgil went off to the Civil War. Magdalena was told in 1863 that Virgil had died, so she moved to the Oregon Territory and remarried. Some historians believe that Virgil never knew he had a daughter until 1888, but this has been proven false. It was in 1899 when Virgil first met his daughter, Nellie.

Virgil Walter Earp In 1895, Virgil and Allie traveled to Colorado, meeting up with Virgil's brother Wyatt. This was short-lived ... as they soon moved back to Prescott, Arizona, where Virgil became involved in mining. Later, he moved south and began ranching in the Kirkland Valley. It was at this time, in 1898, that he received a letter from a Mrs. Levi Law. It turned out that this young woman was, in fact, Virgil Earp's daughter from his first marriage. The next year, encouraged by his wife, Virgil traveled to Portland, Oregon where he was reunited with his first wife, Ellen, and Daughter Nellie Jane (Law).
