Virgil: Life
built 657 days ago
Virgil worked on the Aeneid for the last 11 years of his life. The composition of it, from a prose outline, was never easy for him. Augustus once wrote to ask to see part of the uncompleted work. Virgil replied that he had nothing to send and added, "I have undertaken a task so difficult that I think I must have been mentally ill to have begun it."

During his life Virgil worked at many jobs. He farmed, worked on rail construction in Wyoming, drove a stagecoach, worked in a sawmill (in Prescott, A.T.), drove a mail route, and later in life, tried his hand as a prospector. A tight-knit family, the Earps generally kept close contact with one another, and often trailed along together to different living locations.

Virgil's work will be seen at the New Life Gallery in Berlin and the Chelsea Gallery Space in New York City in an exhibition called "(New Life) Trajectories," curated by Sixten Kai Nielsen and Martin Rosengaard. The show is part of the Winter Residency for the Transart Institute and a joint-project with Wooloo Productions.

After nightfall, as Virgil's train was pulling out of Tucson on its way to California, Virgil's bodyguards killed Frank Stilwell on the tracks near the train station. While all were later indicted for the shooting, none were brought to trial, having fled the territory. Wyatt much later in his life said Stilwell and Ike Clanton had been waiting near the train to kill Virgil. Clanton admitted he and Stilwell had known Virgil and the rest had been coming to Tucson, but would be quoted as saying he thought they were coming to try to kill him along with Stilwell. Why Stilwell would go to the train yard knowing this, was not explained by Ike.

Many only know Virgil as a professional composer/ educator with a penchant for writing adventure music, film scores, and music for haunted attractions. In addition to have two degrees in music, a BA from Indiana State University and a Masters in Music Technology from The Indiana University School of Music, Virgil has a rich background coming from a lifetime devoted to music. Raised in a musical family, Virgil grew into music as a natural part of life. His father, in addition to being an amateur musician, was ... an electronic technician/ engineer who did work for Hewlett-Packard and NASA. Fanning the musical flame by introducing his son to DIY electronic noise-makers sent Virgil sailing into the world of music technology. As most kids in elementary school do, he joined band in fifth grade and began playing trumpet.
