By ranking viral as Lycos are, some marketing folk could be lured into a false sense of security if they see their campaign at the top of the charts. This kind of activity may be fine if you are looking for mass awareness with no concerns for any wastage as your product appeals to almost all – for example, a soft drink manufacturer perhaps. But what if you have a slightly more targeted audience? Viral marketing may still work for you, may still get passed round to everyone that you are trying to reach in the niche area you are looking at, but that might not reach the levels expected by Lycos, or even fit their criteria of being, for example, humorous. However, it is possible that your campaign may have been the most successful of its kind, and generated a tremendous return on investment.
