Viral: Tests
built 795 days ago
If no HCV RNA is found by a test, a person’s viral load is said to be undetectable. Note that whether viral load is undetectable depends on which test is used. PCR and TMA tests can measure viral loads much lower than those a bDNA test can detect. Importantly, the blood of an individual with a very low viral load may still contain HCV even though the current tests cannot measure it; that is, the virus may not have been truly eradicated from the body.
Data were analyzed twice, since half the viral load samples required re-testing after the initial analysis. Results from both analyses were presented at the 42nd Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of the Liver this month in Barcelona, Spain.
thumbnail Live recombinant viral and bacterial vectors and plasmid DNA have been explored as novel approaches for delivering HIV proteins as immunogens (Figure 2). Results of several exciting studies in animal models employing these novel approaches have been reviewed elsewhere [14]. The plasmid DNA is known to be less immunogenic, particularly in inducing CTL, in clinical testing in humans than in animal models. Several improvements such as codon-optimization for expression of viral proteins in mammalian cells, alteration in regulatory elements, inclusion of cytokine expressing genes and novel formulations with polymers are being pursued to increase immunogenicity of DNA vaccines.

A viral load result that reads “undetectable” does not mean that you are cured. It may mean that the level of HIV virus in your blood is below the threshold needed for detection by this test. Other tests that are ultra-sensitive and that can measure as few as 20 to 40 copies in a milliliter of blood can be performed to make sure.
See below for what a typical viral load test looks like. Click on a test name in the left column to view an explanation of its significance & meaning. (note: to see and/or print a complete list of test name explanations, click here.)

Quantitative viral load tests — These tests measure the amount of virus in one milliliter of blood. They are often used to assess whether or not treatment with interferon or interferon plus ribavirin is likely to be successful and, later, if treatment is working.
