Virus Attaching to a Cell Other common viral infections are caused by herpesviruses. Eight different herpesviruses infect people. Three of them—herpes simplex virus type 1, herpes simplex virus type 2, and varicella-zoster virus—cause infections that produce blisters on the skin or mucus membranes. Another herpesvirus, Epstein-Barr virus, causes infectious mononucleosis. Cytomegalovirus is a cause of serious infections in newborns and in people with a weakened immune system. It can ... produce symptoms similar to infectious mononucleosis in people with a healthy immune system.

In clinical trials, treatment with Crixivan caused substantial improvements in the surrogate markers for HIV disease -- CD4 cell counts and viral load, the indicators of disease status in people with HIV, on which the indication for Crixivan is based. Crixivan was ... generally well tolerated. It produced increases in CD4 cell counts, an important measure of immune system function, and significant reductions in viral load, or levels of HIV in the bloodstream. However, the clinical relevance of changes in viral load induced by Crixivan has not been established. Crixivan is not a cure for AIDS, and its effect on the development of opportunistic infections and survival has not yet been shown, although such studies are under way.

Other antiviral drugs strengthen the immune response to the viral infection. These drugs include several types of interferons, immunoglobulins, and vaccines. Interferon drugs are replicas of naturally occurring substances that slow or stop viral replication. Immune globulin is a sterilized solution of antibodies (... called immunoglobulins) collected from a group of people. Vaccines are materials that help prevent infection by stimulating the body's natural defense mechanisms. Many immune globulins and vaccines are given before exposure to a virus to prevent infection.

Anyone can get it. Viral gastroenteritis occurs in people of all ages and backgrounds. However, some viruses tend to cause diarrheal disease primarily among people in specific age groups. Rotavirus infection is the most common cause of diarrhea in infants and young children under 5 years old. Adenoviruses and astroviruses cause diarrhea mostly in young children, but older children and adults can ... be affected. Norwalk and Noroviruses are more likely to cause diarrhea in older children and adults.

The viruses that cause viral meningitis are contagious. Enteroviruses, for example, are very common during the summer and early fall, and many people are exposed to them. However, most infected persons either have no symptoms or develop only a cold or rash with low-grade fever. Only a small proportion of infected persons actually develop meningitis. Therefore, if you are around someone who has viral meningitis, you have a moderate chance of becoming infected, but a very small chance of developing meningitis.

Some of the enteroviruses that cause viral meningitis are contagious while others, such as mosquito-borne viruses, cannot be spread from person to person. Fortunately, most people exposed to these viruses experience mild or no symptoms. Most people are exposed to these viruses at some time in their lives, but few actually develop meningitis.
