Unlike most of the anti-viral drugs currently in use, Ampligen has virtually no side effects. In a long-term study of Ampligen treatment of 15 CFS patients, the only adverse events linked to Ampligen were lightheadedness (one case) and facial flushing (one case). There were no changes in laboratory blood test values, blood clotting, or urinalysis test values (Strayer, David et al.; "Long Term Improvements in Patients With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Treated With Ampligen"; Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome 1(1):35, 1995).

No specific treatment for viral meningitis exists at this time. Most patients completely recover on their own. Doctors often will recommend bed rest, plenty of fluids, and medicine to relieve fever and headache.

Recently, researchers have noticed that the viral load of many patients sometimes went from undetectable to a low level (usually less than 500) and then returned to undetectable. Careful study suggests that these ?blips? do not indicate that the virus is developing resistance.

Early symptoms of viral meningitis are flu-like and include sudden high fever, headache, vomiting, weakness, and stiff neck. The neck is so stiff that the patient cannot lower the chin to the chest. The patient may be confused or difficult to wake.

The symptoms of viral meningitis are usually milder than those of bacterial meningitis. However, symptoms of bacterial and viral cases can be similar, particularly in the early stages of the disease. This makes prompt, accurate identification of the infectious organism crucial to effective treatment and the patient's recovery.

Expressed in IU, the average viral load is at 1 Million IU/ml. All these classifications of viral load of course make sense only for patients that are not being treated against HCV.
