Since the September 2001 warnings, reports have been published in several medical journals concerning the side effects of Vioxx. The Journal of American Medicine reported that Vioxx users are at significantly higher risk of cardiovascular problems.

One of Merck’s legal strategies has been to fight Vioxx class action lawsuits. In almost all cases, it has been successful when the victims sought class certification but it faced an uphill task when insurers, HMO’s and union health plans argued that Merck hid the safety risks of Vioxx before recalling the deadly painkiller.

May 27, 2002 - New research suggests that Vioxx may delay healing of a broken bone. There is no proof yet that anti-inflammatory painkillers cause major bone problems, but some bone experts call the research compelling enough that doctors should explain the risk to patients. Merck and Pharmacia the makers Vioxx deny any link.
An article published November 5, 2004, in the British medical journal The Lancet stated that Merck should have pulled Vioxx in 2000 [site requires registration], when copious data already showed the dangers. Researchers at the University of Berne, who found that the risk of heart attack more than doubled in patients who took Vioxx, reached their conclusions by performing an analysis of the same data that had already been analyzed in 29 different studies prior to 2000 – underscoring the fact that Merck failed to withdraw the drug early enough.
